FROZEN - SENTENCE VARIETY PRACTICE (Addition, Concession, Opposition, Cause/Effect)
1.) ADDITION: We can show addition using several different connecting words. The common connecting words used to show addition are: and, not only…but also, as well as, in addition, additionally, moreover, also, furthermore, in addition to.
2.) CONCESSION: A concessive clause is a clause which expresses an idea that suggests the opposite of the main part of the sentence. The words used to show concession are: although, even though, despite, in spite of, nevertheless, however, but.
3.) OPPOSITION: The following connectors help to express opposition or difference between two things or ideas: whereas, while, in contrast, but, yet, on the other hand, unlike.
4.) CAUSE/EFFECT: When we talk about an effect resulting from a certain cause, we use expressions such as: because, since, as a result, because of, due to, therefore, consequently.
Exercise 1: Fill in the blanks with the
connecting words which express addition, concession, opposition or
cause/effect.
